The First
trail Kit.

Six things, chosen slowly.

A Field Note By Frank Martinez

The first kit is never the right kit. You'll learn that on a Tuesday, somewhere past the second switchback, when something rattles in a way it shouldn't and you find yourself wishing for half what you brought and twice what you didn't. These six things came out of that wishing. Carried in, used honestly, written about in the journal.

The layer you reach for before the kettle finishes. The pack that carries the day and holds the quiet. A mug for the first pour, a tag for the one walking beside you, a steady staff for the descent, and a soft harness for the dog that won't stop bringing you sticks.
